Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

StreetSignal is an independent neighbourhood intelligence platform, currently covering 744 Cape Town suburbs with additional cities planned. We are not affiliated with any estate agency, property portal, or municipal authority.

Our Information Officer, as required by the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA), is:

2. What data we collect

StreetSignal is a statically generated website. We do not operate a database, user accounts, or any server-side application. We do not directly collect or store personal information.

We use the following third-party services which may process limited data on our behalf:

  • Cloudflare Pages hosts and delivers this website. Cloudflare processes IP addresses and request metadata for security and performance. Under POPIA, an IP address can constitute personal information. StreetSignal does not access or store these IP addresses, but Cloudflare processes them as a necessary technical function. Cloudflare retains this data for up to 30 days. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy. Cloudflare's servers are located internationally, meaning your IP address may be processed outside South Africa.
  • Plausible Analytics counts page views if you accept the analytics consent banner. Plausible does not use cookies, does not store IP addresses, and cannot identify individual visitors. Plausible's servers are hosted in the EU. See plausible.io/privacy.
  • Google Search Console provides us with aggregated, anonymised search performance data. No individual user data is accessible to us through this service.

3. Why we process this data

We rely on the following lawful grounds under POPIA Section 11:

  • Cloudflare IP processing: legitimate interest in website security and performance (POPIA Section 11(1)(f)).
  • Plausible Analytics: your consent, given through the analytics banner (POPIA Section 11(1)(a)). This is voluntary. Declining has no effect on your ability to use the website.

4. Cookies and local storage

StreetSignal does not set first-party cookies. Cloudflare may set strictly necessary security cookies (__cf_bm, cf_clearance) regardless of your consent choice. These cannot be disabled.

We store your analytics consent preference (ss_cookie_consent) in your browser's local storage so we remember your choice. This is not a cookie but is stored on your device.

5. Data sources we display

All neighbourhood data on StreetSignal comes from public datasets (SAPS, City of Cape Town, Stats SA, DBE). We display statistical totals and averages only. No individual property identifiers, household survey responses, or personal information is published on this platform. See our data attribution page for the full list of sources.

6. Cross-border data transfers

Cloudflare and Plausible process data on servers located outside South Africa (Cloudflare globally, Plausible in the EU). Both providers maintain data protection standards that meet or exceed POPIA requirements. No personal information collected by StreetSignal itself is transferred outside South Africa.

7. Your rights under POPIA

Under POPIA, you have the right to:

  • Ask whether we hold any personal information about you
  • Request a copy of any personal information we hold
  • Ask us to correct or delete personal information
  • Object to the processing of your personal information
  • Withdraw your consent for analytics at any time by clearing your browser's local storage

As StreetSignal does not operate user accounts or store personal information directly, these rights are unlikely to apply during normal use of the website. However, if you wish to make a request, email our Information Officer at [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days.

8. Children

StreetSignal is a general-purpose information resource. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 18. If you believe a child's personal information has been included in our data, please contact our Information Officer immediately.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the platform evolves. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above.
